Mean

The mean is another way of saying 'average.' It is caculated by summing the values for a given analysis variable, then dividing that sum by the number of observations in the series.

Say you are given the following 5 test scores.

85, 90, 92, 78, 82

The mean would be caculated by adding the scores (85+90+92+78+82=427,) then dividing that sum by the number of test scores observed (427/5.) Here, the mean score (average test score) is 85.4.
